Board for Evaluation of Interpreters

The purpose of the Illinois BEI Interpreter Testing and Certification process is to provide certification options to Illinois interpreters.  The BEI Certification Tests are both proficiency-based and criterion-referenced evaluations.

All new applicants for the BEI Certification Tests at Basic, Advanced, or Master levels must first pass the BEI Test of English Proficiency before being eligible to apply for any performance exam.

Applicants who wish to take the Advanced or Master Performance Test must hold the current qualifying certification before taking the BEI Performance Test at either level.

Please view the Certification section for additional information.

Candidates are highly recommended to review the Illinois BEI Manual found in the Resources section to become familiar with the general format, content, and evaluation criteria used in the examinations, as well as, explain IDHHC's policies and procedures for the testing process.

The Illinois BEI Interpreter Testing is administered by the Illinois Deaf and Hard of Hearing Commission. The only testing location is in Springfield, Illinois.
